Mississippi River Adventures

The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife & Fish Refuge provides protected habitat for fish, wildlife and plants, and is an important breeding area for several bird species. Prairie Island is an ideal location to access the river and refuge areas for observing wildlife, paddling in the backwaters, and fishing and hunting. There are two boat launches at Prairie Island: upriver at the Spillway and in the campground. Straight Slough flows into the main channel. During low flow, boats that draw more than 3-feet of water will be challenged to clear a shallow section of the slough halfway between the campground and the main channel. Be sure to use a depth finder.
